Time and labor are the two main costs on any home renovation. The labor cost average $20 to $30 per hour sometimes more depending upon where you live. Of course if you are doing it yourself you can save thousands sometimes when calculating how much to paint a house. How to save on your house paint cost and do it yourself tips are included on my other pages as well.
Older homes often have surfaces that newer homes don’t. Plaster walls, exposed brick, wood paneling and exterior architectural blocks are common in older homes. Using the right paint and tools on these surfaces (plus the right paint and tools for the room itself) is important to ensure the longevity of the project. .
If you do plan on tackling the project yourself, make sure you are comfortable with heights and hard work!
Thank you for sharing these tips, Josh! My boyfriend and I are about to embark on a major re-design of our condo and I am not looking forward to all the painting prep work. It does make a huge difference if you do it right though! Stacia February 25, 2015
“Platinum painting had done a fantastic job repainting my exterior this week. They use lifetime premium paints. The price is very reasonable and workmanship is the best of its class. The site was kept very organized/clean from start to finish. Eddie is very detailed with the quote and he also helps us with the color selection. Proof of liability insurance is provided up front. I will hire them again, and also spread good words among my friends and families. A+++”
This painting company goes above and beyond any expectations. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
A 5,000 square foot home with peeling paint will add roughly 48 – 64 hours of scraping and up to $3,200 of extra cost.
Be ready to pay a minimum of 50% more for your job if you plan to have textured ceilings or walls: about $6 to $7.5 per sqft. There are differences in price and quality of interior paint.
Insect infestations, especially termites, can cause major damage to a home’s structure. They will tunnel tiny holes into drywall, leaving the internal material weakened and crumbling.

Another tip! If you’re painting textured walls, even edge lock tape won’t always do the trick! You can put the tape on the wall and then go over the edges with a thin stripe or PAINTABLE clear caulking! One part will come up with the tape, the other stays on the wall under the paint, and keeps the paint from seeping under the edge of the tape. Just remember to keep it thin so you don’t see it on the wall! Hazel February 25, 2015
Make sure your home’s exterior is checked for any necessary rotten wood repairs before beginning a paint job.
The cost of a professional house painting will vary depending on a number of factors, including the size and scope of the job, the materials and tools needed, the condition of the walls or surface that needs to be painted, as well as the company’s personal rates. On average, however, homeowners can expect to pay about $40.00 per hour for a standard house painting job. Simpler jobs may cost less–around $35.00/hour–whereas more complex jobs will cost more, around $45.00/hour.
If you’re painting your home’s interior, you may have an entirely different issue on your hands. Plaster walls can begin to crack from stress or age. Before you think about repainting, it is crucial to repair your walls. On top of making your wall look brand-new again, plaster and drywall repairs reinforce your space in terms of strength. On average, it will cost between $500 and $1,000.
